I am a firm believer of reincarnation. Not of the spiritual kind as such, more of the recycling kind. I think that is why I knit so much. I don’t see my knitting mistakes or miss-shaped sweaters as a wasted life, because if I can’t reclaim the yarn from an old project, I’ll either give the garment to charity or find another use for it.
Take this green jacket, for example: This sweater was one of my first design ideas I had for a swing jacket, back in 2011. I was also going through a ‘green’ phase! The yarn was Three Irish Girls Galenas Chunky – a lovely Merino yarn, very firm and incredibly warm, but tonally imbalanced. This was not a problem for me – I could easily overlook such imperfections. But, after wearing it a number of times, I came to the conclusion that I needed longer sleeves and less ‘swing’ on it if I intended to wear it as a jacket that would keep me warm in winter. On the flip-side, I couldn’t wear a coat over it, because it was too thick!
So, it sat in my cupboard, unloved and unworn.
Not any more….! This baby is now the coziest cushion cover ever!
If you remember this stripey vest below (if not, check out my archived post here: https://jimiknits.wordpress.com/2011/10/12/drama-chaos-mayhem-my-work-is-done/), you will remember the agony and nightmare it created just to make a simple garter-stitch vest.
Oh my goodness never again! Of course, as it turned out, I didn’t really get enough wear out of it. I was reluctant to throw it away and the yarn was not salvageable. More the pity because it was my first ever purchase of The Plucky Knitter‘s Primo Fingering yarn – a deliciously soft Merino/Cashmere/Nylon. So, it too sat in the cupboard doing nothing.
Well…. waste not, want not – as the saying goes! The ceramic heart buttons were from Hodgepodge Arts.
Now, I keep looking at all my other knitting projects to see what I can make with those. But first, I really need to work out what I’m going to make with all these knitted swatches! 🙂
